Short-Term Memory & Cognitive Retention
The Short-Term Memory test is a fast-paced, 6-minute cognitive assessment widely utilized in pilot aptitude screenings. It is specifically designed to measure your capacity to rapidly absorb, retain, and recall critical operational data over a brief period. Strong working memory is an absolute necessity for commercial pilots, who must continuously process and act upon a relentless flow of new information from Air Traffic Control (ATC), complex flight instruments, and dynamic operational environments.
What the Assessment Covers
During this intensive assessment, your mental bandwidth will be challenged through three distinct memory exercises that simulate high-workload cockpit scenarios. First, your operational retention is tested as you memorize and recall standard flight parameters, such as specific radio frequencies, assigned headings, and airspeeds. Next, your spatial memory is evaluated through an exercise where you must memorize and retrace an exact sequence of navigational waypoints. Finally, you will face a visual pattern recognition challenge requiring you to memorize the precise locations of various colored dots within a 3×3 grid. In all exercises, you must accurately recall the data after a brief, distracting delay.
